Why?
Why rats? My own answer is because they are intelligent, engaging, social, demanding and stimulating small animals. They have all of the personality traits of dogs, including owner dependance and trainability, without the longer lifespan considerations and the need for outside exercise, toileting etc. But rats do require energy, effort and attention, and thrive best in a social and stimulating environment. They need supervised time outside of their cage regularly (preferably at least daily), and more time spent emptying litter trays, preparing food and cleaning cages. The cage will become smelly if not cleaned thoroughly about once a week, or when certain foods such as fish or broccoli are given. Rats are also natural gnawers and may chew household items if left unsupervised.
Rats make excellent family pets because they are reliable when treated with respect, and can provide companionship and hours of entertainment and fun. Consideration should also be given as to their compatibility with other pets. They will naturally prey on small birds and mice, and are the natural prey of animals such as cats, ferrets, snakes and some breeds of dog. Many people comfortably manage multi-species households, but these issues should always be fully explored in advance.
